Understanding Champions League Standings

The UEFA Champions League features 32 of the best club teams in Europe who compete in a six-game Group Stage for the right to advance to the knockout stage. There are eight groups of four teams each and each individual group follows a double round-robin, home-and-away format. In the Group Stage, Champions League standings follow a similar format to other European leagues.

Teams who win earn three points, one point is awarded for a draw, and zero for a loss. In the group stage there’s no extra time, so the 90-minute result is final.

Champions League standings and scores are finalized on the last match of Group Play, in which each team in a given group plays at the same time. These scenarios can open up decent opportunities for parlay betting. 

At the end of the Group Stage, the team with the most points in each group advances to the Round of 16 as the group winner. The second-place teams in each group also book a place in the knockout stage as group runners-up. 

Meanwhile, the third-place team in each group is transferred to the second-tier UEFA Europa League first knockout round, and the fourth-place team in each group is eliminated from UEFA competition.

A tie in the standings at the end of the Group Stage is broken first by points in head-to-head matches followed by goal difference. In the Round of 16, the group winners are randomly drawn vs. the group runners-up. There are also random draws before both the quarterfinals and semifinals.
