NCAA Tournament Matchups & Odds

March Madness Bracket

The NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament is a tournament that handles 68 teams in a single-elimination event. These teams compete in seven rounds for the national championship. The first NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament was held in the year 1939 and every year afterwards until the pandemic hit the 2019-20 NCAAB season. Then, it picked up again after everything had settled down.

The tournament handles 68 teams in a single-elimination event. These teams compete in seven rounds for the national championship.

There are two ways in which the teams are chosen:

  • For example, 32 of the 68 teams are picked using “automatic bids”, which means these teams won their conference’s tournament and automatically got into the March Madness tournament.
  • The other 36 are taken in as “at-large” bids, and will be chosen by the NCAA Selection Committee as teams which almost made it automatically but didn’t, and still are worthy of a shot at the madness.

Once the teams are whittled down to 68, each team is assigned a seed and assigned one of four regions. This helps define what will be their first-round matchups and how their routes towards the championship are going to take place.

March Madness Bracket FAQs

What’s the origin of the term March Madness?

The term “March Madness” was first used by an Illinois high school official, Henry V. Porter, in 1939 to refer to basketball. However, it wasn’t until 1982, when CBS broadcaster Brent Musburger used the term during coverage of the NCAA tournament, that it became synonymous with the event.

How has the NCAA tournament changed over the years?

The NCAA tournament has grown significantly since its inception in 1939. It started with just eight teams, then expanded to 16 in 1951, and continued to grow until the modern 64-team format was introduced in 1985. In 2001, the addition of the Mountain West Conference pushed the number of teams to 65, and a play-in game was added. Three more teams were added in 2011, bringing the total to 68.

How are the teams selected for March Madness?

Teams are chosen through a process called “Selection Sunday.” A committee of NCAA basketball experts evaluates each team’s performance throughout the season and selects the top 68 (men) or 64 (women) teams to participate in the tournament.

When does March Madness take place?

March Madness takes place in March and April, with the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments starting in mid-March and concluding in early April. The exact dates can vary each year, but the semi-final and championship games, known as the Final Four, are usually held in the first week of April.
