The VCU Ram’s standings men’s basketball team had a successful 2021-2022 season. They finished with a record of 25-8 overall and 14-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, finishing in second place behind St. Bonaventure. The Rams earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid, where they reached the round of 32 before falling to Syracuse.
Throughout the season, the Rams displayed a balanced offensive attack, with five players averaging double figures in scoring. Leading the way was sophomore guard Adrian Baldwin Jr., who averaged 14.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. Baldwin Jr. was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team and the All-Defensive Team.
Another standout player was senior forward Vince Williams Jr., who averaged 12.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Williams Jr. was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.
The Rams’ success can also be attributed to their strong defense, which ranked second in the conference in points allowed per game at 64.7. The team also had a positive scoring margin of 9.9, which ranked third in the conference.
VCU’s season included several impressive victories, including a road win over St. Bonaventure, the conference champions, and a home win over Davidson, who finished in third place in the conference. They also had a six-game winning streak during conference play.

VCU Rams Basketball History
Overall
The VCU Rams are a Division I team based in Richmond, Va. VCU joined the Atlantic 10 Conference before the 2012-13 NCAAB season following a 17-year stint in the Colonial Athletic Association.
VCU, like former CAA rival George Mason, owns one of the greatest Cinderella runs in NCAA Tournament history.
After sneaking into the expanded field of 68 in 2011, the 11th-seeded Rams beat USC in the First Four, before upsetting No. 6 seed Georgetown, No. 3 Purdue, No. 10 Florida State, and top-seeded Kansas en route to their first Final Four.
That’s where the Shaka Smart-led Rams finally met their match, losing 70-62 to No. 8 Butler. That said, the Rams remain the lowest seed to reach the Final Four, joining four other 11 seeds: LSU in 1986, George Mason in 2006, Loyola Chicago in 2018 and UCLA in 2021.
In 2012, VCU returned to the Big Dance after winning the CAA Tournament title. For the second straight year, the Rams pulled off a first-round upset, knocking off fifth-seeded Wichita State as a No. 12 seed. This time, however, they lost in the round of 32, 63-61 to Indiana.
VCU, no stranger to beating the odds, also won first-round games as a lower seed in 2007 and 2016.
Shaka Smart: 4th Winningest Coach
Smart, the winningest coach in program history (163-56), left following the 2014-15 season for Texas. His replacement, Will Wade, took the Rams to back-to-back tournaments before bolting for LSU. Mike Rhoades, formerly at Rice, has coached VCU since 2017.
In 2012, the Rams left the comforts of the CAA for the higher-profile A-10. Since the move, they’ve won one conference tournament title (2015) and two regular season championships (2016, 2019).
The Rams made the NCAA Tournament seven straight seasons from 2011-17, then returned in 2019 and again in 2021. However, they infamously had to forfeit that most recent trip after several players within the program tested positive for COVID-19.
