Bayern won both and have dominated this fixture in recent years, with eight straight wins in all competitions. This will be the first Der Klassiker that Robert Lewandowski isn’t on either roster for over 12 years. Lewandowski scored three of Bayern’s six goals vs. Dortmund last season. Borussia Dortmund demolished Sevilla 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday. The win led to Julen Lopetegui getting sacked by Sevilla. Now, BVB are just a couple of wins away from qualifying for the knockout stage. However, they lost 3-2 to Koln last weekend in the Bundesliga to drop down to fourth place. More consistency will be key if Dortmund are to mount a title challenge.
English youngster Jude Bellingham has emerged as Dortmund’s star player this season. The midfielder leads the Borussia Dortmund team stats, with four goals in all competitions. Bellingham scored a brilliant solo goal vs. Sevilla and he’s playing with a lot of confidence ahead of the World Cup. Julian Brandt has also scored in consecutive matches from midfield. Getting goals from their forwards has been another story, though.
Edin Terzic has used a combination of Anthony Modeste, Donyell Malen, Karim Adeyemi and Youssoufa Moukoko up top this season. Combined, they have just six goals in all competitions. Striker Sebastien Haller has undergone successful chemotherapy but Dortmund have reiterated he can take all of the time he needs to recover. Haller will be sorely missed on the front line in the meantime and is a bonafide goalscorer. A more positive development for Dortmund is the emergence of goalkeeper Alexander Meyer, who was excellent vs. Sevilla.

Heading into the international break, Bayern Munich failed to win each of their previous four Bundesliga matches. That changed quickly as they smashed Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 last Friday. Then, Bayern picked up a dominant 5-0 win vs. Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Tuesday. These are the kinds of results that we’ve come to expect from Bayern and perhaps it’ll build some confidence.
Another confidence boost could be getting back Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller in time for Saturday’s match. They both have asymptomatic COVID cases and missed Tuesday’s match. If everything goes according to plan, they could both be in the starting lineup vs. Dortmund. The Bundesliga schedule over the next few weeks for Bayern is looking difficult, so they need all hands on deck.
Winger Leroy Sane has been a standout in recent matches. He scored twice vs. Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday and also got on the scoresheet vs. Leverkusen. Sane leads the team with eight goals, in all competitions. Meanwhile, Sadio Mane and Jamal Musiala have seven each. Musiala, a 19-year old attacker, is an incredibly exciting player and leads Bayern with 13 goal contributions this season.
