EFL Cup Semifinals Odds: Second Leg Preview

One Foot in Final for Newcastle and Man United

Home Teams Set to Close Out

Both road EFL teams ended up victorious in the EFL Cup semifinals Odds last week and can now close out at home. Newcastle’s Joelinton scored the game’s only goal at St. Mary’s as the Magpies have a decent shot to win their first major domestic honor since 1955.

Meanwhile, Manchester United dominated Nottingham Forest last Wednesday and came away with a 3-0 win. Wout Weghorst scored his first goal for Manchester United and Marcus Rashford got on the scoresheet again. It’ll take a miracle for Forest to turn the tie around but stranger things have happened.

We’ll take a look at their and Southampton’s chances to mount comebacks as we review the EFL Cup semifinals odds.

First Leg Recap:

NEWNewcastle vs SouthamptonSOU

Score: 1 Newcastle ~ Southampton 0

Newcastle’s match at Southampton was way more lively than the scoreline let on. Joelinton appeared to have opened up Newcastle’s account in the first half but the goal was called back on a handball.

Joelinton later missed a chance from point blank range as the game stayed scoreless. Newcastle’s Nick Pope was called into action on a few occasions and made some solid saves.

The Newcastle Magpies’ substitutes made a big impact as Alexander Isak set up Joelinton who couldn’t miss on his third big chance. Adam Armstrong equalized for Southampton but, again, the goal was called back on a handball. Newcastle sub Allan Saint-Maximin drew a second yellow from Duje Caleta-Car on a trailblazing run.

Caleta-Car will not miss Tuesday’s match because he served his suspension on Saturday vs. Blackpool in the FA Cup. Newcastle entered the match as -125 favorites, according to the EFL Cup semifinals odds, and both won and covered the spread.

Following a last minute loss to Arsenal in the EPL, Manchester United wasted no time vs. Nottingham Forest. Marcus Rashford got on the scoresheet for the ninth time in the last ten games just six minutes in. Less than twenty minutes later Sam Surridge appeared to equalize but he was in an offside position.

Forest had a couple of other good chances but Wout Weghorst made them pay by converting a rebound just before halftime. Forest didn’t give up but United’s quality was too much. Bruno Fernandes put the game to bed with a volley and Man United are very likely going to Wembley. United easily covered the one-goal spread.

Second Leg Fixtures:

Date & Time:

Newcastle will advance here with a draw or a win and come in at -2000 EFL odds to qualify for the final. Even a one-goal loss for the Magpies will send this fixture into extra time. Nick Pope has been brilliant in goal for Newcastle this season and they’ve kept 10 shutouts in their last 11 competitive matches.

Southampton do show -115 odds to get on the scoresheet here, though. In five previous EFL Cup fixtures, the Saints have averaged 1.6 goals per game. They enter this match as one-goal underdogs, though.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle show -140 odds to cover the spread and -240 odds to win the match. They’ve been excellent at St. James’ Park this EFL season and hold an unbeaten record at their home ground. Miguel Almiron has been a standout for the Magpies this season and he looked lively last week vs. Southampton.

The Paraguayan winger has nine goals and two assists, in all competitions. Newcastle also have firepower up front with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson both viable options.

Southampton sit at just +110 odds to cover and +675 odds to win the match. Notably, Southampton haven’t won at St. James’ Park since 2015. A draw, which won’t be enough for the Saints, displays +350 odds. Newcastle are in the midst of an incredible season and currently occupy third place in the English Premier League standings.

They’re currently priced at +120 odds to win the competition and are heavily favored to close things out at home. There were a lot of chances in last week’s EFL matchup but under 2½ goals show a -120 price. Note that Newcastle signing Anthony Gordon is cup tied and will not be able to play on Tuesday.

Date & Time:
Location: Old Trafford Stadium

It would be a complete disaster if Manchester United don’t qualify for the EFL Cup final in February. They got a perfect result on the road last week and lead by three goals heading into this one. Manchester United’s one loss of 2023, so far, occurred when midfielder Casemiro was suspended for the Arsenal match.

The Brazilian scored twice in Man U’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading on Saturday and could feature on Wednesday. United head into the match as 1½-goal favorites and show +105 odds to cover the spread. Forest are expected to make this one a match and sit at -135 ATS odds.

While Manchester United played last weekend, Forest have a full week of rest before the second leg. Even though United only have a few days of rest, they could get Luke Shaw back for this one. The left back missed the first leg and the match vs. Reading with an illness.

If he can’t play, expect Tyrell Malacia to be back in the starting XI. Midfielder Christian Eriksen also left the Reading match with an ankle injury and is questionable. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White is also questionable with an ankle injury. In any case, Man United are -275 favorites heading into this one.

EFL Cup semifinals odds price Nottingham Forest at +750 odds to get their first win over Manchester United since 1994. United have won the first two meetings of the season 3-0 and a draw also shows +390 odds for this one.

As long as Manchester United don’t lose by three or more goals, they’ll advance here. It’ll be interesting to see if Erik ten Hag rests some of his stars ahead of Saturday’s match vs. Crystal Palace.

Goals are expected either way, with over 2½ sitting at -140 odds. The Red Devils are also the current favorites to take home the EFL Cup trophy, at -150 odds.
