Head-to-Head

Real Betis and Roma haven’t met in any competitive matches recently. They did, however, play a friendly last august, that was anything but! Three Roma players were sent off as Real Betis picked up a 5-2 win. Although, our Roma vs. Real Betis match preview strongly advises against putting too much stock in that match.

Result Crucial for Roma

  • Recent Form (All Competitions): W,L,W,W,L
  • Europa League Record: 1-1, 3rd Group C
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D Rick Karsdorp (Out), M Lorenzo Pellegrini (Probable), M Georginio Wijnaldum (Out), M Ebrima Darboe (Out), F Paulo Dybala (Day-to-Day)

Roma came out of the international break with a bang. Jose Mourinho’s Giallorossi came back to defeat Inter Milan on the road, 2-1. Paulo Dybala opened up Roma’s account after getting snubbed by Inter over the Summer. Then, center back Chris Smalling went home the winner in the second half. Roma are in a solid position in Serie A but they’ve already slipped up in the Europa League.

Roma opened up their campaign by losing to Bulgarian side Ludogorets, 2-1. After defeating HJK Helsinki 3-0 in their second match, Roma are tied with Ludogorets on points; however, they’re currently in third in the Group C Europa League standings based on head-to-head. A win here could potentially put Roma on top of the group and Mourinho won’t be satisfied with anything else.

Both Dybala and club captain Lorenzo Pellegrini went off on Saturday due to injuries. Dybala and Pellegrini could very well be ready for Thursday and the injuries don’t appear to be serious. Squad rotation is certainly possible in this match and Andrea Belotti could get the nod up front. Usual starter Tammy Abraham came on as a sub on Saturday so he could also have fresh legs for Thursday. Even with a few injuries, Roma can put forth a strong team here.

Betis Winning Streak Snapped

  • Recent Form: L,W,W,W,W
  • Europa League Record: 2-0, 1st Group C
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D Youssouf Sabaly (Day-to-Day), M Victor Camarasa (Out), F Juanmi (Out)

Real Betis fell behind within 10 minutes to Celta Vigo on Sunday and were down to 10 men by the 20th minute. To their credit, Betis managed to create chances but the score stayed at 1-0. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak in all competitions. Los Verdiblancos will be looking to bounce back on Thursday but face a tough test in Rome.

They face Roma on Thursday in the first of back-to-back meetings on the UEFA League schedule. If Betis can get all three points on Thursday, they’ll take a six-point cushion over Roma into their last three matches. With Juanmi out long-term; Betis aren’t as dangerous up top.

Still, Willian Jose has two goals in two Europa League starts thus far. Borja Iglesias, the main man up top for Betis in La Liga, has six goals in seven matches this season. He could get the nod over Willian Jose, as this is an important match for Betis. Defying father time, 41-year old winger Joaquin is the oldest outfield player in the history of the Europa League.

Odds & Preview

Our Roma vs. Real Betis Match Preview identifies this as the UEL match of the week and it’s expected to be a close one. AS Roma are -115 favorites but underdogs Betis are also priced at -115 to cover the ½-goal spread. Betis are much improved on defense this year after conceding two goals per game in the Europa League group stage. In nine matches (all competitions) they’ve conceded just seven goals.

UEFA competitions very seriously and is the only coach to win the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. Regardless, a draw shows shorter odds than Betis, at +260.

Los Verdiblancos sit at +330 odds to win their first-ever competitive match vs. Roma. That’ll be a huge challenge as the Giallorossi are unbeaten in their last 18 European matches at the Stadio Olimpico. Jose Mourinho also takes UEFA competitions very seriously and is the only coach to win the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. Regardless, a draw shows shorter odds than Betis, at +260.

Expect both teams to be organized and not be overly aggressive offensively. Under 2½ goals for the match is priced at -125 odds yet both teams to score sits at -150. Both of Roma’s previous matches have gone over, along with one of Betis’s two.
