Neymar Hoping to Come off Bench, Brazil Hoping to Move Past Pesky South Korea

âš½Brazil vs South Korea: Game Recapâš½

Results: Brazil 4-1 South Korea

A sublime performance of Brazil saw Tite’s side languidly progress into the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

They scored four goals in the first half and were 2-0 up within 15 minutes. Playing in a lively yet relaxed manner, this was perhaps the most ominous display from any side in the competition.

Two tributes for Pele, currently undergoing cancer treatment in a Brazilian hospital, punctuated each half with a flag being unfurled after 10 minutes of each period.

By the time of the first display, Brazil was already 1-0. A speculative cross evaded several South Korean defenders. Vinicius Jr. coolly took a touch, surveyed the vista in front of him, and threaded a curling shot through a crowd into the top corner.

Rattling the ball around the field enthusiastically, Richarlison was fortunate to be awarded a penalty after a challenge from Jung Woo-Young. Neymar rolled the ball home, starting after suffering an ankle issue in the opening game against Serbia.

Richarlison, having already scored one of the goals of the tournament in that match, added another after only 30 minutes, played in by a slick pass from Thiago Silva. The Tottenham Hotspur striker passed the ball into the net, and Brazil was all but through.

There was still time in the first half for Lucas Paqueta to score six minutes later. This time, Vinicius Jr was the creator, innovatively scooping the ball into the path of Paqueta, who finished excellently on the volley.

Though Brazil turned the engine into idle mode in the second half, there was still entertainment in the shape of a glorious goal from Paik Seung-ho, who rifled a shot past Alisson from thirty yards out in the 76th minute.

Did We Get It Right?

Below you will find all the predictions we made before the matchup, on December 03, 2022.

South Korea Overcome the Odds

In one of the most upset-heavy World Cups of all-time, South Korea managed to defeat Portugal to seal a knockout stage berth. In doing so, they became the third Asian team to qualify for the round of 16.

They’ll face off against a Brazil team who were upset by Cameroon. For Brazil, though, it was a chance for Tite to rotate his squad with them already through to the knockout stage. We’ll see if the Seleção can bounce back and if Neymar has a chance to play as we review the Brazil vs South Korea odds.

Brazil and South Korea have met seven times in their history. This has been a fixture Brazil have enjoyed, with a 6-1 record. They last met in June in a friendly, which Brazil won 5-1. Neymar bagged a double in the match and Philippe Coutinho, Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus also got on the scoresheet. Brazil also defeated South Korea 3-0 in a 2019 friendly. This is the first chance to bet on the Brazil vs South Korea odds in the FIFA World Cup, though.

BRABrazil: Rest Key Players in Loss to Cameroon

Previous Match: 1-0 L vs. Cameroon
Injuries and Suspensions: D Alex Sandro (Day-to-Day), D Danilo (Day-to-Day), D Alex Telles (Questionable), F Gabriel Jesus (Questionable), F Neymar (Questionable)

Brazil managed to seal knockout stage qualification with wins over Serbia and Switzerland. In both matches, Brazil were able to keep shutouts and entered their match with Cameroon carrying a +3 goal difference. So, it was quite likely that Brazil would win the group barring a heavy defeat to Cameroon. That gave Tite the opportunity to shuffle around his side quite a bit right down to the goalkeeper. The Seleção created a bunch of opportunities in the match but couldn’t seem to find a breakthrough.

Backup winger Gabriel Martinelli was particularly lively and had a few chances for Brazil but couldn’t find the back of the net. In the end, it was Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar who scored the game’s only goal. He gave Cameroon their first World Cup vs. Brazil, which was also their first World Cup win for 20 years.

Despite the loss, Brazil’s odds to win the FIFA World Cup are still the shortest of any team. They sit at +220 odds to take home the trophy but if they can get Neymar back it’ll boost their chances. The PSG star has been sidelined since injuring his ankle in the 2-0 win over Serbia.

Reports imply he’ll be able to come off the bench vs. South Korea but further updates are worth looking out for. Brazil have a few injuries in defense as well which could make things tricky. Starters Danilo and Alex Sandro are currently day-to-day but could be ready come Monday. In any case, big things are expected of Brazil.

KORSouth Korea: Advance in Dramatic Fashion

br> Previous Match: 2-1 W vs. Portugal
Injuries and Suspensions: D Kim Min-jae (Probable), D Kim Young-gwon (Day-to-Day)

South Korea were underdogs to advance out of FIFA World Cup Group H and it was always going to be an uphill battle to finish ahead of Uruguay and Portugal. The Taegeuk Warriors managed to draw with Uruguay in their first match, which kept them right in the mix.

Despite having a bunch of chances, they fell 3-2 to Ghana in their next match. With just one point through two matches, South Korea sat at just +700 odds to advance. The only chance South Korea had to advance was to defeat an already-qualified Portugal in its final match.

Plus, they had to hope Ghana drew or lost to Uruguay. South Korea conceded first to Portugal and it looked like they were as good as gone. Then, a defensive blunder on a corner by Cristiano Ronaldo allowed the South Koreans back in the game as Kim Young-gwon capitalized. With Uruguay simultaneously leading Ghana 2-0, South Korea just needed to get another goal to advance. Hwang-Hee Chan, who was out injured in South Korea’s first two matches, came on in the 66th minute to provide an attacking spark.

Right at the start of stoppage time, Heung-Min Son led a last South Korean counter attack. He found Chan, who buried the ball and gave South Korea an incredible win. Manager Paulo Bento, who was suspended from the sidelines, defeated the team he used to manage. South Korea advanced over Uruguay in the FIFA group standings due to scoring more goals and the danger they pose is clear to see. If the Taegeuk Warriors can withstand Brazil’s pressure, they’ve got weapons on the counter attack. Cho Gue-Sung is also an aerial threat so Bento has quite a few options to call on here.

Match Analysis and Odds:

While Brazil have their fair share of injuries, both of South Korea’s starting center backs have knocks. Kim Min-jae made the bench vs. Uruguay but his fitness is still a work in progress. Meanwhile, Kim Young-gwon, who scored the equalizer vs. Portugal, exited in the 81st minute with a quad issue. With or without Neymar, this is a match Brazil are expected to win. The Brazil vs South Korea odds price Brazil at -1000 odds to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, South Korea come in as 1½-goal underdogs at -105 odds to cover. Brazil, who have Richarlison, Vinicius Jr. and Raphinha to call on if Neymar can’t play, show -115 ATS odds. They’ve also advanced to the quarterfinals in their last seven World Cup appearances. Brazil also come in to Monday’s match as -350 moneyline favorites.

The Brazil vs South Korea odds price Brazil at -1000 odds to qualify for the quarterfinals.

This is only South Korea’s third appearance in the round of 16 and first since 2010. They reached the semifinals as hosts in 2002 but haven’t found much success since then. They sit at +1000 odds to win the match and +600 odds to advance.

A draw shows a +475 price, with just a 17.4 percent implied probability. Brazil, for all of their chances created, have only scored three goals during the tournament so far. Regardless, over 2½ goals is priced at -125 odds for the match. Unders are currently 3-0 in Brazil matches at the World Cup. If Neymar can play, don’t be surprised if that changes.
