England Attempt to Knock Out Defending Champs

⚽England vs France: Game Recap⚽

Results: England 1-2 France

Sorry, England fans, the World Cup is NOT coming home. Olivier Giroud was the matchwinner as France edged England 2-1 to reach the World Cup semi-finals, after Harry Kane skied a late penalty.

Kane had converted a record-equalling spot-kick to cancel Aurelien Tchouameni’s 17th-minute opener before Giroud put Didier Deschamps’ side back on course with a 78th-minute header.

Referee Wilton Sampaio pointed to the spot a second time after Mason Mount was bundled over in a dramatic finale. While England scented extra time, Kane blazed over the bar with just six minutes remaining.

While England’s hopes of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966 were dashed again, France booked a last-four date with Morocco as they bid to become only the third side in the tournament’s history to defend their title.

In a highly-anticipated clash, Kylian Mbappe had shown early flashes of brilliance, and a thrilling change of pace helped craft the opener. Then, Tchouameni created space to take a touch and drill into the bottom corner.

Of course, there was a bit of controversy as England called for a foul on Bukayo Saka in the build-up. They also appealed for a penalty when Kane was tripped in the box. However, VAR deemed the challenge outside the box, leaving the English furious.

But Gareth Southgate’s side had responded gamely to setbacks. After Jude Bellingham made Hugo Lloris work shortly after the restart, Saka won a spot-kick that Kane lashed past his club team-mate, to pull England deservedly level — and match Wayne Rooney’s goal-scoring mark of 53 for his country.

The game remained tantalizingly poised, and, although England remained vulnerable to the French pace in transition, they were increasingly emboldened. Harry Maguire howled in frustration after heading narrowly wide, and Saka was thwarted at the far post.

Jordan Pickford pushed away Giroud’s sidefoot volley at the other end but was powerless when the AC Milan striker -who became France’s outright leading goalscorer earlier in the tournament- met Antoine Griezmann’s cross.

A further twist came as Theo Hernandez muscled into Mount, the monitor making the referee’s mind up. Still, Kane’s aim this time was off as the 2018 semi-finalists suffered more knockout agony, even if they exited with heads held high in a game of fine margins.

France and England have met over 30 times in international football and both teams are former World Cup winners. However, this is just the third World Cup fixture between them. France have never defeated England in a World Cup match but did win the most recent meeting. Les Bleus eked out a 3-2 victory over England in a 2017 friendly match. Harry Kane scored two goals in the Three Lions’ loss. England lead the all-time series 17 to nine, with five draws, but France have lost just one of the last five meetings.

ENGEngland: Scoring in Bunches

Previous Match: 3-0 W vs. Senegal
Injuries and Suspensions: D Ben White (Out), F Raheem Sterling (Probable)

Phil Foden earned a second straight start for England on Sunday vs. Senegal. Winger Raheem Sterling was out with a “family matter” and Foden once again made the most of his opportunities. He assisted on England’s third goal of the night, which was the one that put the game to bed. Foden and Marcus Rashford are characteristic of the depth that England have as Gareth Southgate has a selection headache every match. Rashford has scored three goals in the tournament despite only playing 132 minutes so far. They’ve both made their contributions to England’s tournament-leading 12 goals through four matches.

The Three Lions were ruthless in front of net vs. Senegal and made no mistake of their chances. Jordan Henderson scored the first goal of the match 38 minutes in from a Jude Bellingham Cross. Then, captain Harry Kane rifled in a shot in first half stoppage time to shell shock a Senegal side that had looked lively up until that point. Bukayo Saka scored England’s third goal just 12 minutes into the second half and sank Senegal’s hopes.

The England vs France Betting Odds list England’s team total at just ½ and they show -215 odds to get on the board here. They’ve won 3-0 in each of their last two matches and Jordan Pickford leads the tournament field with three shutouts. Both Rashford and Saka have managed three goals to this point, while Kane leads the World Cup with three assists heading into Monday’s matches. At +600 odds, oddsmakers certainly think England have a shot to win their first World Cup since 1966.

FRAFrance: Giroud and Mbappe Make History

Previous Match: 3-1 W vs. Poland
Injuries and Suspensions: D Lucas Hernandez

Olivier Giroud continues to make a case for being the most underrated striker of his generation. The AC Milan man is a World Cup winner, Champions League winner and has won league titles in both France and Italy. Still, many wrote off France’s chances to defend their World Cup title when striker Karim Benzema went down with an injury. That’s despite the fact that Benzema wasn’t part of the World Cup squad from four years ago. With his excellently-taken first half goal vs. Poland on Sunday, Giroud added another accolade to a long list of them.

The goal was Giroud’s 52nd for France, which is more than any other player has scored for Les Bleus, even the great Thierry Henry. Giroud didn’t score a goal at the 2018 World Cup but he’s already got on the scoresheet three times in Qatar. His teammate Kylian Mbappe currently leads the Golden Boot race with five goals and shows -165 odds to win the award. Mbappe scored two late goals to secure victory for France on Sunday and he’ll certainly be a handful vs. England.

Mbappe, at just 23 years old, has already scored as many World Cup goals as his PSG teammate Lionel Messi. In fact, Mbappe just became the first player ever to score nine total World Cup goals before his 24th birthday. France have conceded in each of their four matches so far, but their attack is incredibly potent. Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele have also had their moments so far. Despite losing to Tunisia, France finished first in the Group D FIFA World Cup standings and eased past Poland in a 3-1 win on Sunday.

Match Analysis and Odds:

This is expected to be quite the competitive match, as the England vs France Betting Odds list it as a pick’em. Defending champions France come in at -145 odds to cover, while England sit at +125 ATS odds. Dating back to 2018, France have won their last five knockout stage matches in normal time and sit at +140 odds to do so here. Meanwhile, England are +215 underdogs and a draw shows +225 odds for the match.

While France are a matchup nightmare for most teams on paper, England seem to match up reasonably well. At right back, Kyle Walker has the speed to keep up with Kylian Mbappe. England center backs Harry Maguire and John Stones are also both good enough in the air to neutralize the threat Olivier Giroud poses. That doesn’t mean France won’t create chances, though. Both teams attempt to break down defenses on the wings and it could make for an attractive match to watch.

Over/under goal total for the match is currently listed as two goals. Once again, the over is expected to hit, as it shows -145 odds.

The over has come through in three of four of both France and England’s matches at the tournament. The over/under goal total for the match is currently listed as two goals. Once again, the over is expected to hit, as it shows -145 odds. It remains to be seen whether Raheem Sterling will be available for England in this match. Regardless, dangerous players like Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford can take his place. Both defenses are serviceable but this is a match where plenty of chances should be created.
