Qatar 2022 produced some theatrical moments right up to its final moments. Argentina got their first World Cup win for over 30 years in penalties following an incredible France comeback. Morocco’s run to the semifinal was another massive highlight. There were a bunch of under-the-radar upsets at the tournament that we’ll also take a closer look at. Here are some of the most shocking FIFA World Cup scores.

Most Shocking Results

Group C

ARG Argentina 1–2 Saudi Arabia KSA

Saudi Arabia pulled off the biggest upset of Qatar 2022 in their first match. Lionel Messi scored ten minutes for Argentina, and it looked like Argentina would cruise to victory. However, the Green Falcons had other ideas and mounted an incredible second-half comeback.

Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari scored two top-class goals, and Saudi Arabia hung on for their best-ever win. However, both teams’ fortunes changed drastically afterward. Argentina finished first in the Group C World Cup standings and won the tournament. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia lost their final two group-stage games.

Group D

TUN Tunisia 1-0 France FRA

France had already sealed knockout stage qualification heading into their final group stage game vs. Tunisia. Tunisia took full advantage of France coach Didier Deschamps fielding a squad of primarily reserves and got an iconic 1-0 win. Wahbi Khazri scored the winning goal for the Carthage Eagles. This was easily one of the more shocking FIFA World Cup scores.

Group E

GER Germany 1-2 Japan JPN
ESP Spain 7-0 Costa Rica CRC
JPN Japan 2-1 Spain ESP

Group E was always expected to be one of the best groups at Qatar 2022. Powerhouses Germany and Spain were placed together, along with wild cards Japan. Japan pulled off some of the biggest upsets in the tournament.

They beat Germany and Spain to finish first in a tough group. Japan’s comeback win vs. Germany came as a massive shock as Japan’s counterattacks proved to be deadly. One of the most incredible World Cup scores was also Spain’s 7-0 opening win over Costa Rica, in which six different Spain players got on the scoresheet.

Group F

BEL Belgium 0-2 Morocco MAR

Morocco’s opening draw vs. Croatia was impressive enough. Then, the Atlas Lions made a huge statement by beating tournament darlings Belgium 2-0. This win instilled confidence in Morocco as they made a subsequent run to the semifinal. It also marked a fifth straight clean sheet under new head coach Walid Regragui.

Group F

CMR Cameroon 1-0 Brazil BRA

Brazil, like France, sealed knockout stage qualification early. Heading into the final group stage match on the World Cup game schedule, coach Tite decided to shake up his lineup completely. Still, Brazil were the favorites to go on and defeat Cameroon.

Cameroon frustrated Brazil for 90 minutes, and the Indomitable Lions lived up to their name. Vincent Aboubakar finally got a breakthrough for Cameroon in the 92nd minute and got a second yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration. It’s not a goal Aboubakar or Cameroon fans are likely to forget anytime soon, though.

Group H

KOR South Korea 2-1 Portugal POR

Uruguay had thought they did enough to advance to the round of 16, with a 2-0 win over Ghana on the final Matchday. South Korea had other ideas as they pulled off a comeback win vs. already-qualified Portugal. Hwang Hee-Chan’s stoppage time goal simultaneously put South Korea through to the round of 16 and knocked out Uruguay.

Round of 16

MAR Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 pen.) ESP

Morocco, after winning their group, managed to frustrate Spain completely. La Furia Roja couldn’t score in 120 minutes of play vs. Morocco and failed to convert any penalties. Morocco goalie Yassine Bounou was the hero in penalties as the Atlas Lions advanced to the quarterfinal for the first time in their history.

Quarterfinals

CRO Croatia 1-1 Brazil (4-2 pen.) BRA
MAR Morocco 1-0 Portugal POR

The stage was set for a Brazil vs. Argentina final if the former could get through 2018 finalists Croatia. Croatia were determined to make another run and refused to give up vs. Brazil. Although Brazil had great chances, they couldn’t make them count. Both teams scored in extra time, but Croatia was victorious in penalties. Meanwhile, Morocco became the first African team to reach the semifinals of a FIFA World Cup by defeating Portugal 1-0. Youssef En-Nesyri’s header was the difference as the Atlas Lions sent Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal packing.
