Colton Herta to race under father’s livery for IndyCar finale

The no. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda will race with a special livery at Laguna Seca

There have been multiple father-son duos in many different racing series. NASCAR has had the Petty, Earnhardt, Elliott, and Jarrett families, among many others. Formula 1‘s seen a couple of fathers and sons earn championships, including Graham and Damon Hill and Keke and Nico Rosberg. The World Rally Championship has the likes of Harri and Kalle Rovanperä and Petter and Oliver Solberg. IndyCar has its fair share of these duos, too, including current Andretti Autosport driver Colton Herta, son of IndyCar race winner Bryan Herta.

Bryan had two wins in his nine-year CART career before his move to the IndyCar Series in 2003. Both wins came from pole position at the world-famous Laguna Seca Raceway. Earlier this year, Colton Herta tracked down Bryan’s car that he raced to victory at Laguna Seca in 1998 and gave it to him as a present.

And Bryan returned the favor for this year’s IndyCar schedule finale.

Andretti Autosport announced that Colton will be racing a special livery in the season finale at Laguna Seca. Bryan’s iconic Shell livery will inspire a one-off design for one of his and Colton’s favorite tracks. This IndyCar news adds something special to what looks to be a coronation of Álex Palou’s second title in three years.

Colton, already in his sixth year of IndyCar Series racing, has seven career wins already. Two of those have come at Laguna Seca in 2019 and 2021. It’s one of his best tracks on the IndyCar race schedule as he’s excelled at road and street courses.

Colton Herta’s having one of his worst seasons in his short IndyCar career this year. He’s had just one podium finish through 14 races, the fewest since his rookie season. He does have two pole positions this year at Road America and Mid-Ohio as the main bright spots of the year.

He’ll likely be one of the favorites in the IndyCar odds for victory in Laguna Seca. Maybe sporting his dad’s livery can help him get to the front of the field and contend for a win. For a driver with Formula 1 aspirations, he’ll need it.
