Mariners vs Padres Betting Preview: Great Players on Both Sides, Yet Struggling

Mariners Dropped Three Straight, Padres Struggling, Both Below .500

Let’s start our Mariners vs Padres betting preview with a look at where each team is in the standings and their current MLB playoff odds. Seattle(10 GB) is likely out of the American League West with only the Oakland Athletics providing a cushion between them and the bottom of the division. Currently, the Mariners are six games behind the New York Yankees for the last wild card spot, making each series critical.

The San Diego Padres are seven games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the AL West and four games behind the Miami Marlins in the wild card race. As usual, MLB weather predicts it to be a beautiful night in San Diego with the first pitch at 9:40 pm ET / 6:40 pm PT. We continue our Mariners vs Padres betting preview with a look at each team from a betting perspective.

Pitching Trying to Keep M’s In Race

We know the problem with the Seattle Mariners is offense. In their last five games, Seattle has managed to score just 12 runs while losing four of the five games. The only game they won was a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees behind 8 innings of three-hit ball from George Kirby and even that wasn’t settled until the bottom of the 10th.

Logan Gilbert (3-3, 4.08era) gets the start after allowing five earned runs, and seven hits, in four innings of work. When Gilbert starts, Seattle has lost six of 10 (-267 units). This has been a far cry from what bettors remember him to be over the last two seasons when Gilbert put up a 37-19 record, making the public a sweet 1862 units of profit. There’s a lot left to the 2023 season, but the M’s have been an unreliable wager (-952 units) after three straight years of profit (+4735 units since 2020). We continue our Mariners vs Padres betting preview with a quick spotlight on the Padres.

Padres Have Cashed Four Straight Unders, 40 of 59 overall

We try to focus on who we think is going to win a specific game but it’s hard to overlook the number of tickets the San Diego Padres have cashed for under bettors. Makes sense considering the Friars own a sputtering offense (.222 avg, 29th) along with a pitching staff that’s one of the best in the game with a 3.75 era (7th in MLB). For side bettors, the concern comes from Fernando Tatis. Jr in the second spot (.263, 11 HR, 27 RBI), Juan Soto (.248, 10, 27), and Manny Machado who raised his average to .222 (5 HR, 19 RBI) after a 3-4 night against the Chicago Cubs, Monday.

This is part of the line-up that the Padres spent a combined $76 million on. Couple that with their highest-paid player, Xander Bogaerts (25.5 million) battling through a wrist injury to go with a seven-homer season and bettors are left with an unreliable offense that leans on their pitching to win. Tonight, Joe Musgrove (3-2, 4.71) will be on the hill for San Diego. In his six starts, Musgrove has been one of the few starters that has received some support with San Diego putting up an average of six runs per start.

That number is inflated some because, in three of his outings, the Padres put up five, ten, and 16 runs. Three others they gave the California native just two. The overall number looks great but the truth is, production for Musgrove is just as unreliable as the rest of the staff. Let’s conclude our Mariners vs Padres betting preview, let’s get you a winner.

Bettors Hammering Seattle Early

We can see why the public is in favor of putting their money behind the Mariners. They’re getting a decent plus-money price with a team and pitching match-up that appears to be equal to what they would back with the Padres. Might as well get some pus money. 72% of the early moneyline wagers are in on the Mariners, but that hasn’t been enough to sway the number with only a few books slightly moving off the opening line of San Diego -130. Seattle has dropped five of their last six games against a righty on the road, a task made more difficult because of their unfamiliarity with Musgrove.

The Padres have sputtered but have played well in the first game of a new series, winning eight of their last 11. We recommended backing San Diego tonight, but wait for some time to see if you can get a better number than -130, with the public backing the Mariners in the first few hours of betting, That concludes our Mariners vs Padres betting preview, we wish your wagers nothing but the best tonight.
