Rafael Devers Stats: Boston Getting Strong Return on Investment

Devers' 46 RBI's Rank Third in MLB

Rafael Devers stats are consistently among the best in baseball. It’s why the Boston Red Sox signed the 26-year-old third baseman to a blockbuster 11-year, $331 million extension last offseason. The deal — the largest in team history by total value — ties Devers with the franchise through the 2033 season. It was also the sixth-largest value in MLB history.

After allowing All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts to walk in free agency, the Red Sox made it a priority to lock up Devers. He’s coming off a big season, in which he batted .295 with 42 doubles and 88 RBI. His 4.4 WAR (wins above replacement) ranked near the top of the sport.

How valuable has Devers been since inking that huge deal? Let’s dive into Rafael Devers stats for the 2023 season.

Milestone Man

Devers has maintained his reputation as a big-time run producer. The two-time American League All-Star ranks third in baseball with 46 RBI, trailing only Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia (49) and Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez (48). He drove in two runs in Tuesday’s 9-8 loss to Cincinnati at Fenway Park, including the 500th of his big-league career.

At 26 years and 218 days, Devers became the fourth-youngest player in franchise history to reach that milestone, behind Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, and Jim Rice, and 35th all-time.

For his career, Devers now has 501 RBI over 740 games. He’s exceeded 100 RBI twice (115 in 2019 and 113 in 2021).

Going Yard

Devers remains the biggest power threat in Boston’s lineup. He has 13 homers in 203 at-bats this season, keeping pace with the MLB home run leaders. That puts him third among third basemen, behind Los Angeles’ Max Muncy with 17 and Chicago’s Patrick Wisdom with 14, and ninth in the majors.

Devers now has 152 career home runs, an average of 22 per season. His career-high is 38, set in 2021. He hit 32 in 2019 and exceeded 20 on two other occasions.

He is currently the only player in Boston’s lineup this MLB season with double-digit homers. Triston Casas, Masataka Yoshida, and Justin Turner have each hit six, while Connor Wong and Alex Verdugo have five apiece.

(Not as) Busy on the Basepaths

Devers is still among the most feared hitters in baseball, however, he’s not getting on base as frequently. He’s sporting a career-low.286 on-base percentage, ranking him 149th out of qualified hitters. He has only one other season with an on-base percentage below .300 (.298 in 2018).

It shouldn’t be a concern, as Devers has reached base at a .338 clip over his career. His .783 OPS is also down. However, that too should soon climb.

Big Impact on Boston

Boston, of course, has benefitted from Devers’ presence in the lineup. The Red Sox are fourth in the majors with 281 runs scored. They also rank fifth in OPS (.766), sixth in slugging percentage (.432), and seventh in hits (489).

At 28-26, Boston is fifth in the AL East, 9.5 games back of Tampa Bay, but just 4.0 games out of a Wild Card. With a plus-10 run differential, the Red Sox seems due for positive regression.
