Super Bowl MVP Props: Who Will Super Bowl MVP Mention First?

God is an Underdog

The NFL Odds Pick… Teammates Above All?

It is the hallmark to every acceptance speech whether it’s in the Super Bowl or an awards show, thank your family, associates, and maybe God – or the other way around.

According to the Super Bowl MVP props, the winning player is most likely to first mention their teammates (-155) over God (+140) or the city/fans (+900).

This sounds like a hot take given that each team’s quarterbacks, the most likely winners, are both men of strong faith.

Mahomes and Hurts are Christians Before Athletes

Both Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are the favorites to win the Super Bowl MVP (+130 and +120, respectively). And despite their phenomenal football talents, they are Christians first. Mahomes began his post-AFC Championship interview by mentioning God. He even shut the question down first to mention the Almighty.

Also, prior to their first Super Bowl game in 2020, Mahomes talked about his faith: “Faith has always been big with me,” Mahomes, who is also the favorite on the NFL MVP odds, said. He also added that he’s playing for God, not just for the Kansas City Chiefs fans. “Obviously I want to win every game, but I’m glorifying him every single time I’m out there.”

As for Hurts, the Eagles’ starting quarterback is also a devout Christian and has talked openly about how important his faith is to his career.

“That’s something that I’ve just matured in and realized – that God is everything and He’s worthy of praise,” Jalen Hurts told CBS Sports. “You have to put Him in the center of everything that you do. And that’s what I believe. … I’ve been blessed to grow, learn things, and just mature. And I know God has been there the whole entire way.”

If it were entirely up to them how to start the interview, they may just lead off with the traditional “Firstly, I’d like to thank God…”. However, that may not be how the interview starts hence why the Super Bowl MVP props do not favor God as the first one mentioned. And instead…

The Team Comes First

Mahomes or Hurts (or any other Super Bowl MVP) could start it their way and thank their teammates right away. Or they can answer a question from the interviewer and find a way to mention the team. The NFL is a team sport after all and even with the Super Bowl MVP, it took the whole team to win the game.

If it’s Terry Bradshaw doing the interview, he may ask something football-related that will prompt the Super Bowl MVP to mention how his team played. Alternatively, the coaches at long odds of 28-1 could even be mentioned first. There is definitely a lot of narrative behind both coaches here so the Eagles MVP may give shine to Nick Sirianni as the often-doubted coach.

Also lost in all the talk about Mahomes’ bum ankle, Hurts’ shoulder could also not be fully healthy. He looked less than spectacular in that blowout win against the 49ers. If he wins MVP, he will shout out the team for carrying him. Otherwise, anything less means Hurts would be the leader on the Pro Bowl MVP odds instead.

What About Family?

As important as family is for any player, they typically get pushed behind the team and/or God. Family is a long shot at 15-1 here. There may be situations when the MVP brings up something personal either when they have a close friend or relative going through difficult times. In another case, an MVP like Hurts can mention their parents for constantly believing in them despite the naysayers.

“Keep your circle small,” Hurts said in regard to his dad’s advice prior to the Peach Bowl in his college career. “The bigger you get, the smaller your circle should be.” It’s treasured advice that Hurts could bring up in his speech this Sunday.

And last is the team owner at 40-1. Typically, players mention owners as a footnote somewhere toward the end of their speech. But like family, there may be special circumstances where the MVP mentions the owner first though not a lot stand out here as the Super Bowl MVP props indicate.
