What Is the NFL Playoff Bracket?
The NFL Playoff bracket isn’t your typical bracket-style format that you may see in other sports like soccer or college basketball. Each side of the bracket represents the two conferences; the AFC and the NFC. Seven NFL teams from each conference make the NFL Playoff bracket.
When looking at the overall NFL Playoff Picture, the team that earns its respective conference’s best record gets a first-round bye, meaning that team does not have to play in the Wild Card Round.
After the Wild Card Round, teams are reseeded for the next round of the NFL Playoff schedule. The team that received the first-round bye plays the lowest remaining seed in the Divisional Round.
The Divisional Round dwindles the field down to two teams remaining per conference. Those teams play each other the following weekend in the Conference Championship with the winners advancing to the Super Bowl.
NFL Playoff Format
How Are They Used?
The NFL playoff picture uses the seeds to format the playoffs. Each side of the bracket contains seven seeds. The top four seeds are given to the teams that win their division. The order among the division winners is then decided by which team has the best record.
The remaining three spots are called Wild Card spots. Those spots are given to teams with the best record among non-division winners from the NFL 2023 schedule. The NFL playoff schedule is set ahead of time, but the exact matchups are TBD.
How Do Byes Work?
A first-round bye is awarded to one team in each conference. To receive one of the first-round byes, a team must finish the regular season as the top seed in its conference. The teams with a first-round bye do not play on the opening weekend of NFL Playoff games.
Teams with the first-round bye are the envy of the rest of the teams on the NFL Playoffs schedule, as they get an additional week of rest, which also helped players that might’ve been previously banged up to have a better chance at becoming healthy by the time they play the following week.
The NFL Playoffs officially kickoff on Saturday, January 14 with the Wild Card Round.
The round is considered complete after all six NFL matchups have concluded with the final game of the round concluding Monday, January 16.
When determining the NFL Playoff picture, the teams that finished the regular season with the best record from each conference receive a first-round bye and therefore do not have to play in the opening round.
The Divisional round follows the Wild Card round and will be played on January 21 and 22. Matchups are decided by seeding by the remaining teams, rather than a traditional bracket format.
The highest remaining seed takes on the lowest remaining seed going forward. The final two teams remaining in each conference will battle for a spot in the Super Bowl in the Conference Championship round on Sunday, Jan 29. The teams that win in the Conference Championship round move on to the Super Bowl Sunday, February 12, 2023.

Betting on the NFL Playoffs
NFL Moneyline Betting
There are many avenues one can choose when deciding to bet on the NFL Playoffs. One of the most basic bets on the board is the moneyline. By betting the moneyline during an NFL Playoff game, you’re betting on who you think will win the game. Plain and simple
NFL Point Spread Betting
Betting the spread is one of the more popular bets to make on a football game. Betting the spread means you’re taking the favorite to win by more than that many points or for the underdog to win outright or lose by less than that many points.
Total Betting
Betting the total is another popular bet. When betting the total, you choose to bet on whether the total points will be more or less than that number.
Future Bets
You can also do more long-term bets, or futures. For example, one could bet on who they believe is going to win the Super Bowl from that point, or even who will win Super Bowl MVP. Other futures include Conference Championship winners and round of elimination.
NFL Prop Bets
If one doesn’t want to wager on games, there’s ways to bet on individual players with player props.
When betting a player prop like passing yards, you’ll choose whether you think that quarterback will throw for more or less yards than the number. Player props can be a fun way to bet if you don’t have a read on the game itself.
