WRC Standings

The World Rally Championship is the highest level of global competition in rallying. It is owned and governed by the FIA. The series consists of 12 WRC events on all sorts of surfaces.

We will review this year’s championship and the current WRC standings by driver and the total points.

WRC Standings Explained

The driver that finishes with the most points at the end of the WRC season is given the championship. However, there are multiple championships going on within the WRC season. Along with drivers, co-drivers, teams and manufacturers all have a respective championship.

Points are given at the end of each rally to the top-10 drivers and co-drivers. 10 points are awarded to first place, 18 to second place, 15 for third place to round out the podium. 12 points are given to fourth, 10 to fifth, eight to sixth, six to seventh, four for eighth, two to ninth and one to tenth.

WRC Season Explained

The season is 12 events long over the span of almost 11 months. The driver with the most points at the conclusion of the season is awarded the championship.

When does WRC start?

The World Rally Championship starts in late January with the Rallye Monte-Carlo and ends in the middle of November.

Why are WRC cars hatchbacks?

Hatchbacks are smaller than sedans. They’re lighter with a smaller wheelbase, which allows them to perform with more efficiency on the track. The shape makes them more aerodynamic. The bigger window in the back of the car also gives the driver more visibility.

How to watch the WRC?

The World Rally Championship can be seen around the world on WRC+ and Red Bull TV. In Latin America, it can be seen on Fox Sports International and on RevTV in Canada. Each European country has its own channel to watch WRC.

How does a driver win the rally championship?

In the World Rally Championship, points are awarded after each race and goes toward the world championship. The driver with the most points at the end of the season is given the title of world champion.
